BHP Billiton Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation Official Opening

In February 2008, Platform Communications was commissioned to manage the planning and execution of the Official Opening of BHP Billiton's newest laterite nickel mine and processing facility, Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation.

Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation is a fully integrated and self-sufficient operation that represents a US$2.2 billion investment by BHP Billiton.

Platform developed the concept and design for the Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation Official Opening, working as an extension of BHP Billiton's team to effectively organise and manage the event.

The Platform team delivered four outstanding events for the Official Opening, including:

• a VIP Official Opening
• an Employee Concert
• a Community Open Day
• a Community Concert

Platform coordinated more than 2000 guests across the four events. Each event was deemed to be a great success by both BHP Billiton and the event attendees.

The VIP Official Opening was attended by representatives from all levels of government, including Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter and Federal Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson, along with traditional land owners, the heads of major international companies, representatives from the local community and national media.

Our team produced all communication collateral for the event, including the copywriting, design and production of factsheets, brochures, invitations, event marketing material, advertising, activity worksheets and display booths. Platform also coordinated the production of a presentation DVD which was screened at the event.

Our ability to work closely with BHP Billiton on this project was critical to its success. We were able to fast track the formal approval of key decisions, ensuring that all facets of the four events were delivered within the allotted four-month timeframe.
