The Albanese Government has announced it is dedicating $1.2 billion to the Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve to secure Australia’s supply of vital minerals like antimony, gallium, and rare earths. These minerals are essential for clean energy, advanced electronics, and defence technologies.

The Reserve will operate by securing rights to minerals produced in Australia and on‑selling them to meet demand, strengthening supply chains for domestic and international partners.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said, “the world needs critical minerals – Australia has plenty of them and our critical minerals reserve will help us weather global economic uncertainty and help to boost trade and investment.”

Australia will work with partners including the US, Japan, Korea, Canada, Europe, and the UK to diversify and strengthen critical minerals supply chains.

These are welcomed initiatives, which strengthen mining projects, drive innovation, and help secure Australia’s future as a reliable supplier of critical minerals to global markets.
