The Western Australian Government is investing $150 million in a new vanadium flow battery energy storage system in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The 50 MW / 500 MWh installation – designed to discharge for up to 10 hours – will be the largest project of its kind in Australia.

As part of the State’s “Made in WA” initiative, expressions of interest from local businesses to help deliver the project are now open until 30 January 2026.

Key outcomes for WA:
• Boosting regional energy resilience – strengthening power reliability across the Goldfields.
• Supporting local advanced manufacturing and jobs – building skills and capacity in WA’s clean energy sector.
• Developing a local vanadium supply chain – linking mining, processing, and battery production in WA.
• Delivering scalable, climate-ready storage – fire-resistant, recyclable, and well suited to WA operating conditions.

Platform is watching this project closely, particularly its potential to influence renewable energy development, advanced manufacturing, and mining in WA.

This marks a significant milestone for Kalgoorlie-Boulder and a strong example of how local resources can be integrated into long-duration energy storage solutions.
